The actor - who portrayed cheeky chappy Lee Hunter for four years before he left to work on 'Emmerdale' - has signed a six month contract with new series producer Paul Marquess, which will see him return to the village in the next few months to reprise his old role.

A source told DigitalSpy: "It's no secret that 'Hollyoaks' isn't at its best but Paul's decision to bring Alex back into the fold shows that he's committed to taking it back to its best. He wasn't really used at 'Emmerdale' but that'll change here."

Alex left the Channel 4 soap in 2005, and joined the Yorkshire Dale-based show in February 2006.

Everyone's really excited about what Paul has planned - it really is the dawn of a new era.

The 27-year-old star quit 'Emmerdale' last month and his role as postman Jamie Hope ahead of this new 'Hollyoaks' "era".

The source added: "Everyone's really excited about what Paul has planned - it really is the dawn of a new era."

Alex is expected to return to the TV screen around June.
