Becky McDonald doesn't believe she "deserves" to adopt a child.

Katherine Kelly - who portrays the feisty 'Coronation Street' barmaid - has revealed her alter-ego is desperate to adopt a baby with her husband Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) but thinks her turbulent past could mean she's not worthy of a child.

The actress said: "Becky really wants to adopt but deep down she feels she doesn't deserve it. It's going to be interesting to see her have to communicate with social workers. she doesn't like them at all."

Becky - who grew up in foster care and spent time in prison - was left heartbroken recently after suffering two miscarriages and reacts badly when Steve suggests they consider adopting a youngster.

Becky really wants to adopt but deep down she feels she doesn't deserve it. It's going to be interesting to see her have to communicate with social workers. she doesn't like them at all.

Katherine explained: "Becky hits the roof and tells him to give her a chance to get over the news before he starts flinging other people's cast-offs at her. I suppose he's being a bit insensitive mentioning it so soon.

"She talks to Hayley who suggests Becky's troubled past makes her uniquely qualified to understand the needs of a child in case. She and Steve research adoption on the internet and Becky admits she'd love to give a little girl a chance."

    I was adopted at birth and take strong exception to being labeled as a cast-off.
    I think both my mum and dad, and, indeed, birth mother would testify to the same.
