Bruce Jones' wife was terrified he was going to kill them both as she drove along a dual carriageway.

Sandra Jones appeared at the former 'Coronation Street' star's trial for dangerous driving and assault yesterday (18.03.10) and told how he grabbed the steering wheel of their Mercedes as she was driving at 70mph and threatened to crash the vehicle.

She told the jury at Mold Crown Court: "He yanked it up and down four of five times. I was very scared. He said he was going to crash the car and kill us both. He said he was going to crash into a truck. I put my foot on the brake and slowed down. I wanted to get off the road before something else happened."

Sandra claims the incident happened last August on the A55 as she drove the 57-year-old actor from Cheshire to Abersoch, Gwynedd, North West Wales, after he had spent the afternoon in a pub.

He would push me, shout at me and throw things at me. He would hit me with things. He would come home drunk and if I had not got what he wanted to eat, there would be trouble.

The jury were told how Sandra managed to regain control of the car and quickly pulled over at the Traveller's Rest at Rhuallt, Denbigshire, North Wales.

Sandra also told how Bruce - who was sacked from the ITV soap in 2007 - was abusive to her during their 26-year marriage, which she blamed on his heavy drinking.

She said: "He would push me, shout at me and throw things at me. He would hit me with things. He would come home drunk and if I had not got what he wanted to eat, there would be trouble."

Bruce has always maintained he wasn't drunk, but in an interview with police he admitted he had considered taking his life.

He said: "I just sort of said to myself, just ending it all, just getting out of it.

"I could just take that wheel, turn it, and we are both out of here."

But he added: "I never touched no wheel, never went anywhere near."

The trial continues.
