Helen Worth has her "fingers crossed" her 'Coronation Street' alter-ego escapes prison.

The actress - who plays five-times married Gail McIntyre in the ITV show - has revealed her character has plenty of dark days ahead of her when she's taken into custody on suspicion of murder after her husband died following a failed insurance scam.

She begged: "Oh please be on Gail's side! She's going to need all the help she can get. Thank goodness the audience knows she's totally innocent. Honestly, I have no idea how Gail will get out of this awful mess. Please keep your fingers crossed for her - mine are already!"

Then 59-year-old actress believes Gail is extremely stressed after she found herself involved in her late husband Joe McIntyre's (Reece Dinsdale) plan to escape his financial problems by faking his own death.

She said: "Gail is confused and absolutely terrified when the police start investigating. I feel guilty just looking at a policeman. I think that's how a lot of us feel, even if we haven't done anything wrong.

"Gail wants to keep Joe's memory safe, but once you start to lie, it's hard to start. She backs herself into a corner. The odds are stacked against her as she's woven such a tangled web."
