Katherine Kelly is to take the lead in the 'Coronation Street' musical.

The actress - who portrays feisty barmaid Becky McDonald - will reportedly take a break from the ITV1 soap later in the year, when the programme takes to the stage as part of its 50th birthday celebrations.

A source said: "Katherine is a huge name to sign up. She's got this amazing voice that nobody knows about.

"This musical will be the centrepiece of our celebrations."

Although the 30-year-old star isn't expected to leave the show for good, she will need to take several months off as the musical production travels from Manchester to London's West End theatre district.

The source explained to the News of the World newspaper: "Becky is a very important character in the show and we don't want to lose her.

"Katherine really wants to do the musical so she'll probably take a few months off for it and then return.

"Doing both would probably be too much for her. But the details of how it's going to work are still being discussed."

It is not yet known whether Katherine will be joined by any of her co-stars and bosses of the show are desperate to keep details secret.

The source added: "Nobody wants to spoil the surprise. A lot of the show's big stars don't even know what's going on themselves."
