Liz Dawn opened a new hospital research unit and thanked doctors for saving her life.

Liz Dawn and fellow 'Coronation Street' actors Alan Halsall (Tyrone Dobbs) and Helen Flanagan (Rosie Webster) unveiled the new £3.4m research unit for patients with lung diseases at the Wythenshawe Hospital in Manchester.

Liz - who was diagnosed with incurable chronic emphysema in 2004- thanked Professor Ashley Woodcock at the Hospital for saving her life.

I only had a third of my lungs working. I was in a bad way and I had pneumonia twice. I've been coming in here to see him ever since.

She said: "I only had a third of my lungs working. I was in a bad way and I had pneumonia twice. I've been coming in here to see him ever since."

Speaking about her departure from 'Coronation Street after 34 years playing, Liz added: "I've grown up with the characters and with other people and their characters too. But the last five years, my breathing's not been that good and I've thought I'm not going to be able to carry on."

Liz was forced to quit the soap in 2007 after breathing difficulties linked to the disease meant she felt she was unable to continue.
