Coronation Street has really shocked viewers as of late with their Bethany Platt (Lucy Fallon) storyline. Falling for a man who’s using her to pimp her out to friends as part of a rape ring, Bethany has been groomed by Nathan Curtis (Chris Harper), but hasn’t yet figured that out for herself.

In scenes set to air in tonight’s episode of the soap, we’ll see Bethany locked in a room with three different men, and whilst she tries to get out before she’s sexually abused, it may be too little too late. When her family realises the trouble she’s in however, they rush to rescue her; could they make it in time, or will Bethany be abused again?

Speaking to various media outlets at a recent press day, producer Kate Oates promised that, despite the dark scenes coming up, there IS a light at the end of the tunnel for Bethany.

“I definitely want to keep Lucy central to the show,” she explained, “as she has shone through this and Tina O’Brien has just been amazing too. We have some plans. What is nice about where this storyline goes is that when the scales do fall from Bethany’s eyes, and she does realise it’s not right, she takes some power back.

“We see Bethany being active in saving herself rather than just being told. It’s a story for feminists – I really wanted her to take some of that power back.”

Exactly when Bethany will take that power however remains to be seen. We know that it’s going to get worse for the young Platt family member before it gets better, but hopefully her happy ending is right around the corner.

Coronation Street continues tonight (June 2) at 9pm on ITV.
