The television favourites - portrayed by Jessie Wallace and Shane Richie respectively - are stars in the forthcoming six-part drama 'Redwater' and, although the series was only intended to be a one-off project, bosses have been so impressed with filming that they're keen to make it a regular.

A source said: "Everyone thought 'Redwater' would be just a one-off, but plans are being drawn up for it to return once the six episodes are done. There are high hopes that it will become a brilliant new long-running series."

The upcoming series, filmed on location in Ireland, follows the mouthy market stall holder's search for her long-lost son after she recently discovered she gave birth to twins when she was 14, rather than just to daughter Zoe, and the little boy was taken away immediately and adopted by an Irish family living in the remote fishing village of Redwater.

The insider added to The Sun newspaper: "Apart from Kat and Alfie there are numerous characters living in this lovely village who all have stories to tell."

Kat and Alfie haven't been seen in Walford since January when they fled to Ireland to find the brunette beauty's son.

And, although the loveable couple are occasionally mentioned in the soap, insiders believe the show's favourite duo won't be returning to Albert Square any time this year.
