Emmerdale will be treating its viewers with a very different kind of episode this Christmas Day (December 25), as the soap takes a departure from its usual storytelling to devote an episode to Robert (Ryan Hawley) and Aaron (Danny Miller), or as they’re affectionately known to their biggest of fans, Robron.

Teasing the special episode, series producer Iain MacLeod said: “Think Groundhog Day and A Christmas Carol with a little nod to the film Don’t Look Now thrown in and that’s been our approach to the Christmas Day episode.

“It’s been amazing to produce as we’re constantly thinking of ways to push the boundaries of storytelling and keep Emmerdale fresh and our loyal viewers on their toes! We’ve all acknowledged the risks of filming such a standalone episode, but we sincerely hope the audience will appreciate we’ve tried to do something a bit different in the same way we devoted an episode to Ashley’s story last Christmas.”

Robert will in the episode continue to be terrified by what’s going on around him, and when he wakes up on Christmas morning, he finds a completely different reality to the one he’s used to. While the nightmare may not be completely real, it’s certainly something that will have a lasting effect on the village’s resident troublemaker.

MacLeod continued: “Apart from the scary aspect to Robert’s situation, the episode is also heartfelt and hilarious in parts. Christmas wouldn’t be the same without a healthy dose of the Dingles and a comedy cameo which we hope will please our viewers. Watch out for the ghost of Christmas Future as you might recognise them!”

Exactly how the episode will affect the future of Emmerdale, if at all, remains to be seen, but we imagine that being confronted with all the mistakes of the past year will force Robert to take a different approach moving forward.

Emmerdale continues weekdays on ITV.
