An exciting Hollyoaks twist saw fan favourite character Luke Morgan return this week, with veteran soap actor Gary Lucy reprising the role that made him famous many years before. Now struggling with alcoholism, Luke’s relationship with Mandy Richardson is something that’s going to be threatened moving into the weeks ahead.

As we continue to see Luke struggle with his addiction, we’ll also learn that they stem from the rape he suffered in 2000, following an attack by Mark Gibbs. Though the subject is heavy, Lucy seems happy to be back on board on the Channel 4 series.

Asked whether the soap had changed, Lucy told Digital Spy: “Immensely! Fortunately key members of the crew are still here. The good thing about this place has always been that they give people chances, which is lovely.

“You see people who’ve moved up the ranks into other positions – it’s lovely to see people grow like that. Also for a young actor like me when I started with no experience, it was always a great learning place. You get a chance to do it again if you mess it up in one take!”

Saying it made “sense” to come back at this time, fans should expect to see Lucy’s character on screen for at least the next 12 months.

“Everyone’s been really positive,” the actor said of the fan response. “I think it’s really important to bring the character in and help [newer viewers] understand why he is acting the way he is.”

Hollyoaks continues weekdays at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with First Look episodes weekdays at 7pm on E4.
