Anne Kirkbride has been granted an "extended period of leave" from Coronation Street.

The actress has played Deirdre Barlow for over 40 years and met with show bosses to discuss her future on the show and some personal issues, which she'll take three months out to set straight.

The Daily Star newspaper spoke to a spokesperson for the soap who confirmed: "Anne Kirkbride requested a slightly extended period of leave from the show, a request the company was happy to grant."

This follows rumours last month of Anne being offered a quarter of a million pounds to stay on the show, as she's an "indispensable" member of the cast.

A show source explained: "Anne is delighted with her contract renewal - it has further cemented her role as an indispensable cast member."
