The 51-year-old actress joined the BBC One soap as Kush Kazemi's mum Carmel earlier this summer and was initially expected to appear in just a few episodes but she's now revealed producers have asked her to stay on a more permanent basis.

She said: "I'm there for about a year. It's been so wonderful. Normally you go into a show and you know the path your character is going to take. But with Carmel, I get the scripts and think wow, what's going to happen?"

The former 'Doctor Who' star also revealed there are hard times ahead for her character as Kush is set to discover his and his fiancee Shabnam Masood's unborn baby has died.

Bonnie told ITV's 'Lorraine': "I am going to break down completely. There is a big storyline coming up next week and it is completely heartbreaking. I actually cried when I was reading the script on the tube.

"It's a beautifully crafted storyline and I just hope that we do the subject matter justice."

The flame-haired beauty also poked fun at her Best Newcomer nomination at the upcoming Inside Soap Awards.

She added: "It's taken me 45 years to be nominated for best newcomer. I must be a really slow burner!"
