Replacing James Alexandrou in the role is James Bye, stepping in on the BBC One soap as the frut and veg seller, and the actor's revealed he's hoping to get some romance on the Square following the collapse of his relationship with Sonia (Natalie Cassidy).

Speaking to The Sun newspaper, he explained: "Martin and Sonia were together for years and when they got married he was only 19. I wouldn't say he's a ladykiller now, but he'll sow a couple of wild oats."

Returning this week for the fifth wedding of cousin Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt), James thinks Stacey Branning (Lacey Turner) would be an ideal love match.

"Stacey would be great and Lacey is arguably one of the best actresses on the show, so if that happens I'll be extremely happy."

In contrast, James insists Martin and Sonia's romance will in no way be rekindled despite their daughter.

"As much as Martin would want that family back for his daughter Rebecca's sake, they're not in love with each other any more."

The actor is also looking forward to having some "freedom" with Martin's return.

"Martin's got so much backstory but with him being away for seven or eight years, it gives me some freedom."
