The first day of a baby chick's life is hell; there is no other word for it. Here you can see what it's like from their point of view.
Male chicks are considered expendable in the egg industry because they can't produce eggs to sell so many of them are thrown into trash bags and left to suffocate. Others are tossed into high speed grinders called 'macerators' while they are still alive.
There are 305 million chickens used each year for their eggs, otherwise known as 'laying hens' in the industry. They have a nightmare life that lasts for a whole two years. Each hen lives in a crowded space that is no bigger than a file drawer with three other hens. They can't even spread their wings. This is the reality.
