Recent findings have identified that Wirral is the UK's 'fat capital' as it houses the highest number of overweight people in the country.

PETA sent a letter (below) to Wirral Mayor Pat Hackett to offer a solution. It advised that meat free meals could be the answer.

PETA reminds the major in the letter that there's a body of evidence to suggest that vegans and vegetarians have a reduced risk of obesity, heart disease, diabetes and cancer than meat eaters.

In the letter, it asks the mayor to consider setting the example by going meat free during October- World Vegetarian Month.

"Swapping cholesterol-clogging meat pies for heart-healthy veggies is a great way to go from fat to fit, and World Vegetarian Month is the perfect time to start", says PETA Director Elisa Allen. "PETA is eager to help Mayor Hackett lead Wirral in a healthy new direction with delicious plant-based meals."

As well as all the health benefits; veggies have a lower carbon footprint than meat eaters- but most importantly, adopting a plant based diet saves countless animals from pain and suffering on a daily basis.

These are just a few of the reasons why 20% of 16-24 year old Brits are going veggie according to Mintel.

Dear Mayor Hackett,

I am writing on behalf of PETA with a proposal that could help combat Wirral's obesity epidemic and put England's "Fat Capital" on track to become the "Fit Capital": go meat-free during October (World Vegetarian Month).

Overwhelming scientific evidence shows that vegetarians and vegans are less likely to be overweight than meat-eaters are and are also more likely to be in better overall health.

One study, published in BMJ (formerly, the British Medical Journal), showed that vegan men weighed 5.9 kilograms less and vegan women 4.7 kilograms less than their meat-eating counterparts.

What's more, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics - the US' largest group of nutrition professionals - reviewed hundreds of studies and concluded that vegetarians have lower rates not only of obesity but also of heart disease, diabetes, and cancer than people who eat meat.

By giving meat-free eating a try, you'd be setting a positive example for constituents. And if others followed your lead, which we expect they would, Wirral could save millions of pounds, as residents would require fewer medical visits, along with fewer cholesterol lowering medications, diabetes drugs, and other expensive treatments for food-related illnesses.

Chicago's health commissioner, Dr Terry Mason, recently implemented a programme to encourage his city's residents to join him in going vegetarian for 30 days in order to help them slim down and lower their blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol counts. Participants raved about the initiative.

Similarly, when Philadelphia was named the fattest city in the United States, then-Mayor John F Street used his healthy vegetarian lifestyle as an example to encourage Philadelphians to lose weight.

We'd be happy to help you do something similar for Wirral residents. Thank you for your consideration.

Yours sincerely,

Elisa Allen
