Karate champion and marketing manager for Fry’s Family Foods, Tammy Fry has joined Veganuary as an Ambassador to help promote the charity’s Try Vegan in January campaign. Tammy, originally from South Africa but now living in Australia, joins a raft of well-known supporters from the worlds of theatre, television, comedy, cookery and sport who want to make Veganuary 2018 the biggest year yet.

‘I’ve been a vegetarian from birth, so my whole life I’ve never eaten meat,’ she says. ‘And then four years ago we moved to Australia, and when I got here there was just so many alternatives, from plant-based meats, plant milks, cheeses so I guess it just made the transition and the next step so much easier.’

Tammy describes becoming vegan as ‘the best decision of my life’. She continues ‘To know that I am contributing less to animal suffering of any kind makes me feel better as a person. And then to know that my values and my choices are now fully aligned has been amazing.’

Sixty thousand people registered their month-long participation in January 2017’s plant-based initiative, and the charity expects that figure to exceed 150,000 this January. Tammy hopes she can help boost that number. ‘It’s a great thing for people to join up to, give it a shot for 30 days. It’s perfect timing when none of us are feeling like supermodels right after Christmas so it’s a great time to explore new and healthy ways of eating.’

Tammy’s advice for anyone thinking about taking part? ‘Give it a go! You’ve got nothing to lose. There’s a great community out there, there’s a lot of support. If you’re following Veganuary, they’ve got incredible recipes, even celebrity chefs preparing beautiful food that you can explore through this month and you haven’t really got anything to lose. So see how you feel at the end of the month and then decide if this is something you want to incorporate for the rest of your life or for the rest of the year. And enjoy it!’

Says Jane Land, co-founder of Veganuary: ‘We are delighted to welcome Tammy to the Veganuary family, and are proud to have her as an Ambassador. Not only is she a mum and a businesswoman but she is an extraordinary athlete, too. She is a wonderful example of what you can achieve as a vegan, and we are honoured to have her support.’
