Penn and Wright began dating in 1990 and had their daughter, Dylan Frances in 1991. They then had a second child- Hopper Jack in 1993.

The pair married on the 27th April 1996, after six years of dating and moved to Ross, California, where they lived until Wright was robbed of her vehicle at gunpoint in Santa Monica, California so they subsequently moved from Los Angeles following the incident.
They applied for divorce in December 2007, however reconciled a few months later and the court dismissed their case. In February 2009, Penn won Best Actor at the 81st Academy awards and they attended together.
Penn then filed for legal separation in 2009 and withdrew the case after they reconciled in May. In August 2009, Wright filed for divorce again and it was finalised by July 2010. The couple allegedly agreed on child and spousal support, division of assets and who was to have custody of Hopper who was only 17 at the time.
Wright dropped Penn from her professional name shortly after.
Penn talked very openly about his feelings on his past romances in Esquire; "There is no shame in saying that we all want to be loved by someone. As I look back over my life in romance, I don't feel I've ever had that. I have been the only one that was unaware of the fraud in a few of these circumstances blindly."
He also noted that he wasn't aware of the truths in his relationship until it was over, however sees the positives in it happening all the same; "When you get divorced, all the truths that come out, you sit there and you go, 'What the f**k was I doing? What was I doing believing that this person was invested in this way?' Which is a fantastically strong humiliation in the best sense. It can make somebody very bitter and very hard and closed off, but I find it does the opposite to me."
