AXA Insurance has found that over 15,000 brides to be expect a buffer ring before their actual one so they can pick their own wedding jewellery. With an average of £1,373 spent on an engagement ring, it’s important the bride gets the one she wants and that their partner is not out of pocket. Many grooms to be are scared of disappointing their partner with the wrong ring, so take this precaution when proposing.  Many go and choose a ring together at a later date so the bride can get exactly what she wants if she is going to look and admire it on her finger for the rest of her married years.

The sad reality is that with the increasing cost of weddings- some couples actually sacrifice the engagement ring to put the money towards their wedding budget, so some brides never have a ring on their finger until their wedding day.

Unfortunately 16% who were proposed to with a ring from their partner were disappointed with their choice despite hints before the big question. The reason for the disappointment was a mixed bag with some who believed that they couldn’t justify the spend as a couple and the rest just didn’t like what their partner had picked for them.

Some women simply didn’t get a ring because their partner could not afford one- as with many other wedding traditions it would seem that this one might be in danger of becoming redundant.

If you are with a guy who is aged 25-35- don't fear for these are the biggest spenders on engagement rings, typically spending £1,795, just over one month’s salary and if you live in London- the average is £3,548- so there is no reason to accept any less!

At the other end of the spectrum, 11% said that they were only willing to spend one day’s salary on an engagement ring for their lady. 24% spent less then four hours picking one. If you live in Yorkshire- don’t expect the earth as the average Yorkshireman only spends £607 on an engagement ring.
