With the average cost of a honeymoon on the rise, many newlywed couples are opting for a mini-moon to save on costs like Kimye (not that Kim and Kanye need to pull in their purse strings!)

The average mini-moon lasts four days or less compared to the traditional one week or more. The normal honeymoon is setting newlyweds back about £2,220 and with the cost of the wedding still looming, a mini-moon of around £650 seems the more enticing option. Not only is money an issue for couples who have just tied the knot, people are not able to go on long honeymoons because of kids or work commitments. Many employers might not look fondly on taking a long time off for your wedding and your honeymoon just as much as parents need to get back for their children.

Many couples are opting to stay locally in the UK instead of going abroad- only a small proportion are going away to catch some rays- this doesn't seem to be the priority anymore.

Brides tend to be the ones who organise the wedding, so it falls to the groom to arrange the honeymoon. Most couples use their savings to go away with or money from their wedding guest donations.

Paul Havenhand, Head of Insurance at Post Office, said: “For most couples, the post-nuptial getaway is one of the best parts of getting married, often providing some much-needed relief following the stresses of arranging a wedding. However, with traditional honeymoons costing over £2,200, many couples simply can’t afford to go away for longer than a few days. It’s great therefore, that mini-moons provide an attractive alternative, and with so many fantastic places to visit in the UK, newlyweds can have the holiday they’ve always wanted without breaking the bank. The issue is that often with these short trips, holiday basics such as sorting out travel insurance get overlooked and it doesn’t end up being the relaxing break the couple intended it to be. Even if a couple is only going away for a few days, flights can still be missed, luggage can still be lost and accidents can still occur. So regardless of how long they’re going away for, or how much they spent on their trip, it’s important that they have cover in place should the worst happen.”
