On our honeymoon in Scotland we received a free chocolate bar in an old fashioned sweet shop, at the till point and got some balloons in our room upon arrival. We were thrilled at the thought of free candy and decorations; however it would seem that we were dealt the short straw in comparison to other newly married couples.

www.sunshine.co.uk has found that honeymooners are raking it in when they go on their post wedding holiday. In fact on average they get £430 of goodies just because they have recently tied the knot.

A staggering 74% of couples; after telling the hotel staff that they were on their honeymoon were given some sort of complimentary goods to celebrate. Even more of a bonus if the couple had paid for an all-inclusive holiday as they didn't have to think about food or drinks either.

Free things included a room upgrade, complimentary alcohol, room treats or hampers free spa treatments and or complimentary meals.

When the couples totted all of this up it came to an impressive £430- which is not to be sniffed at!

Chris Clarkson, Managing Director of sunshine.co.uk, said the following:

"Honeymooners can often benefit from freebies during their stays abroad, but our top advice for newlyweds would be to pack a copy of their wedding certificate as proof that they've recently married. Hotels and service providers will often ask for this, to prevent couples telling a fib just to get an upgrade!

"Our results show that it's certainly worth informing your hotel if you are on your honeymoon; with the average couple getting over £400 worth of complimentary goods and services, that's a lot of freebies you could be missing out on!"
