Yin and Yang

Cheryl Has An Impossible Choice

Cheryl asks:

Do I end it with my boyfriend or carry on getting hurt.. we've been together for 6 months and for the past month we haven't really spoken much.
He's been having family trouble so he's been really down and moody. He doesn't like to take it out on me, which is why we haven't spoken or seen each other much.
None of his family talk to him now and I feel like he's pushing me away as well.
Do I stick by him because I am all he has got now or do I end it because I can't stand not being able to see or talk to him for weeks. Hurt him or carry on getting hurt myself...

Yin

This sounds really tough on you - no one wants to hurt someone who’s already down. It shows what a nice person you are, and how he’s obviously taking you for granted and maybe hasn’t noticed how it’s affecting you.
If the choice involves one option that is hurting yourself, choose the other. Life is too short. You shouldn’t stick with anyone who can’t make sure you’re happy, despite their own problems.
Suggest he seeks counselling and say you’ll be there for him and want to be there - but that as far as being his girlfriend goes, you need a little break, while he works through his family trouble.
The shock might be enough to make him come to his senses. It doesn’t sound as if you have a real bond or one that he can’t cope without - or you for that matter. Give yourself the space to look after yourself.

Yin

Walk. No, actually, run. You are holding on to a six-month relationship that hasn’t involved much talking or even much fun by the sound of it.
I don’t know how old you are but I sense you should be enjoying yourself and not getting dragged down in this way. It’ll give him a wake-up call, and if he’s really into you, he’ll sort himself out and realise he can’t treat you that way.
Make sure he knows you’re serious - but leave him the option to get in touch when he’s worked through his issues.
