Simone asks :

Hi Lucy,

There's this guy that I've been talking and seeing now for a while. We dated before in the past but things didn't end up so well, he was very complicated so I decided it was time for a break. This was last year and recently I just started talking to him again and rushed things by saying ‘I love you’ but I didn't mean it as I find him very annoying. I am now ignoring and trying to avoid him. What should I do??

Our Reply

Hi Simone,

Love is not so much about what you say but more about what you do to prove it your love or lack of it. If you are ignoring him now then he will likely get the message that you don’t actually love him and you said it in the heat of the moment.

If you find him annoying do you want to even be friends with this guy? If not then ignoring him will likely ensure that he is no longer in your life. If you want him in your life again then tell him that you didn’t mean it and try to maintain a friendship by talking to him again. If he has taken you literally then put him straight- he will soon get the message.

Everyone says things that they don’t mean- so try not to worry too much about it and move on either with or without him as your friend.
