Paula asks :

Hi Lucy,

Probably can't help. Have two questions. First about my career prospects, I'm not working at the moment but I have been trying very hard. Second. I have recently broken up from my partner and I want to know where that will go in the future. Thank you, Paula

In terms of the first question, it’s all about making the most of while you are not at work- volunteering your skills somewhere to demonstrate that you don’t like to get bored and that you want to boost your as much as your can while paid work is not available, or you haven’t found something suitable. Try to dedicate time each day for hunting for jobs and some time for other things that will boost your cv, however don’t let the extra stuff take over your search time. Make sure your cv is all updated- if you are unsure of how to lay it out- make an appointment at your local careers advice centre who can go through it with you.

If you stay at home, you could get down about things and this will hinder your chances of looking. So keep your mind active and don’t waste the time you have to be doing something worthwhile that could be looked upon favourably at interview.

Secondly, a break up and a new job, although may be two big life changes, are an opportunity for a completely fresh art. I would suggest starting with your career and then focusing on your love life after that.

Keeping your mind occupied with finding work will also help you take your mind off your break up too.

Perhaps look for something that is basic at the minute but has prospects so you can work your way up a ladder. The best people at the top are those that have worked right from the bottom so try not to be too proud about what you look for as this can sometimes work against you too.
