Fred asks :

Hi Lucy,

Recently my girlfriend and I found out she was pregnant. This is a huge shock to both of us as we always practise safe sex. We are both very young and professional ballet dancers. She's from Asia and I'm English. We moved to Romania to work with a ballet company a few months ago. Now we feel lost because an abortion seems like the best thing for the child as we wouldn't be able to look after it and for us however morally we feel wrong, we also don't know where to go to ask for medical advice. What should we do? I also feel this could push us apart how do I stop that happening?

The most important thing to stop you from pushing each other apart is to be honest and make the decision together. If one of you feels differently to the other then this can cause feelings of resentment and regret in future- be open about your feelings and worries. Try to give each other time to think about this; listen to each other and take some time out to consider all of your options here.

Hopefully talking to an experienced person will enable you to express what you believe is best for the child and discuss the feelings you describe of thinking that it's also ‘morally wrong’. Once you have talked to each other and a professional body maybe your decision will become a lot clearer.
