Hi Lucy,

I think I may be suffering from depression, but I have no idea how to ask my GP for help or how to go about making the appointment. To be honest I feel a bit silly going to see my doctors. Do have any advice for me on how to approach this situation?

It has taken tremendous courage to write in and ask this question as well as admit that you might need help- so this is already a huge step that you have achieved.

Depression is a very common thing to take to your doctor, so they will not see it as silly.

If you make an appointment when you go they will likely ask to you fill out a form that states how often you feel depressed, at what times and how strong your feelings are. Once you have completed this they might offer you a referral to a counsellor, which comprises usually of around six sessions where you can explore your feelings more deeply with a professional.

If you find that this isn’t helping – then you doctor might suggest that you take some medication. Either way, remember that they are there to help you- whatever avenue you need. Perhaps make a few notes first before you go in if you feel anxious about going, so you can tell your doctor the full extent of your feelings, this should help them to better find the treatment that works for you.

The Samaritans also offer 24/7 help over the phone too- so if your appointment is not for a while then I would suggest you give them a call, drop in or email as they offer a free listening service for people in distress or despair.
