John asks :

Hi Lucy,

I take water tablets prescribed by my G.P and the hospital, but it makes me go the toilet a lot and I wee my trousers no matter what they are, even some new cords I've bought for the winter and it stains the front of my cords and my girlfriend's found I've wet them by feeling them and seeing a wet stain on them; what can I do?

This sounds like a great inconvenience to you right now, especially now it is affecting your relationship.

I would suggest at you go back to the GP that prescribed these tablets and discuss some different options.

There are many different types of water tablets that stimulate in different ways. Some are designed for high blood pressure, to reduce the pressure in the circulatory system. Some are aimed to tackle heart problems to apply less stress to the heart by reducing the volume of blood going to the organ. With such a vast choice of tablets designed for different complaints, you may need to try a few before finding one that does not give you these results.

If you are experiencing dramatic incontinence then it could be an issue with your prostate, which generally happens in older age. An extra volume of water needed to pass caused by the water tablets could possibly indicate problems with your sphincter, as the pressure can sometimes make it work less effectively.

If you go back to your doctor and request another type of water tablet then perhaps this might help, if not there are many herbal remedies that you could try as an alternative- I would strongly urge you to take their advice on which is best for you, as a herbal alternative might not be strong enough to help your condition.
