Lucy asks :

Hi Lucy,

My friend invited me to go shopping with her for her birthday and I told her I could come but I really don’t want to because I hate shopping. Everyone there is the type of person who spends 1 hour looking at the same piece of clothing and then doesn’t buy it. Help! I don’t know what to do.

As it is her birthday, then perhaps you could endure it from a few hours- if she is the type of friend who would do the same for you. Friendship is about give and take so if you know that she would do the same in return then maybe you could go to keep her happy.

Maybe you could split up and look in another shop while they are deliberating over their purchase so you don't feel like they are holding you back?

Shopping can be a tedious process if you are more decisive while others are not, however, if it's in support of her on her special day, then could you make an exception?

Has she arranged a meal out or get together for the night? If so then could you go to that instead? If she knows you well, then she might recognise that this is not your thing and volunteer that you only come to the part of it that she is confident you will like.

Could you suggest that you do something just you and her instead? That way you don't have to go shopping with her and her other friends and you can get some quality time together?
