Sophi asks :

Hi Lucy,

I have been with my boyfriend for around two years now. Everything is going fantastic for us still. I have one small problem which is kind of turning into a big one for me. When is get my period we normally take a break from sex till I’m done. But for some reason for 1-2 weeks after my period sex really hurts me. I feel fine during it but straight away after am get an awful burning sensation. Lube does help but it does not take it away. I'm really kind of worried about it because I want to have sex but for those first couple of weeks I have it associated with pain which makes it hard for me to 'get in the mood'. I also feel super dry for the first two weeks also. Any advice on anything I could try to take the pain away? Thanks!

Hi Sophi,

There might be several things causing this. You might have bacterial vaginosis, which is caused by the normal bacteria growing in your vagina to become too high. If your vagina burns or is itchy after sex, then this could be a symptom of BV. Symptoms also include a grey/while discharge, red labia and it hurts when you pee. Easy ways to reduce the likelihood go this are to wash with water only down there as soaps can irritate and alter the ph. levels in your vagina. Or pay a visit to your doctor and they will be able to prescribe come antibiotics for you.

It could be a yeast infection. This happens when the normal yeast n the vagina takes over the amount of normal bacteria or when the vagina has been injured in some way. Burning and itching are symptoms of this as well a thick white/ grey discharge and swollen labia. If you pay a visit to the chemist they will be able to supply you with some cream to apply to your vagina or a tablet to help fight the infection.

Some women are allergic to semen, If you have discomfort 10-15 minutes and days after sex and have reddened and swollen labia this this could be the explanation. Try to have sex with a condom to eliminate the amount of sperm entering you.

Trichomonisais is another possibility. This is an STD that is indicated by a frothy green/ grey/ yellow discharge, sore labia and itching inner thighs. If treated for this with antibiotics you would need to avoid alcohol as if the two are mixed, it will cause vomiting, nausea and abdominal pain.

A few things you could try before this are; taking a shower after sex and let the air get to your vagina afterwards or use a soothing gel, do not apply this to the inside of your vagina just the labia to help reduce the burning sensation.

Good luck,

Lucy x
