Shuaib asks :

Hi Lucy,

I'm having trouble keeping my emotions steady. One minute I'm ok with the world the way it is and suddenly when I have a realisation or watch a moving movie it just makes me depressed. It makes me feel like I'm so far away from my dreams. Help.

If you feel you are so far away from your dreams then perhaps make a list of what it is that you want to achieve and what steps you need to be able to get there. That way you can work through it systematically and break it down so it doesn't seem like such a huge task.

Perhaps writing a journal might help you to recognise a pattern of when you feel at your best and worst and what is associated with these times. Maybe you have ways to pull yourself back up- if you are able to recognise these – then you may be able to apply them every time you feel down.

Try not to compare your life with those portrayed in movies- they are idealised and incorrect reflections of life. They are also only 2 hours' worth of a fictional person's life- which might make you feel pressure to achieve your dreams faster than you are able.

If your emotions are a little bit all over the place then maybe it's down to your diet or exercise levels. If you eat a lot of unhealthy food then this can make you peak and trough- giving you extreme highs and lows in your moods. If you do have a bad diet, then maybe it's time to address it and add some more slow release energy foods to keep your mood balanced throughout the day.

A lack of exercise can also make you feel down because you are not pumping enough endorphins around your body (the feel good hormones) to give you that natural boost. If you don't do a lot of exercise or only some- perhaps you could up this and see how you feel.

If you have tried the above, then maybe you could make an appointment at your doctor's. You might benefit from some counselling to talk about your mood swings and what it is that triggers them. If you have a greater understanding of why they begin, then maybe you will be able to manage them better when they happen with some professional support.
