Penelope asks :

Hi Lucy,

I am scared to answer my door or answer my phone. This tends to happen when I am premenstrual. Is there any correlation?

Women experience a whole range of emotions before they get their period and one of these can be feeling vulnerable or overly sensitive.

Not answering your phone and not answering your door could be due to overthinking things if you are feeling emotionally exposed.

It may make you consider the worst possible scenario of each action.

I would suggest trying to reduce your stress levels by taking in some light exercise and avoiding sugary foods such as chocolate as this will give you peaks and troughs and may affect your mood further.

If you are on the pill, it might be worth consulting your doctor to discuss an alternative. Perhaps you will be able to find one that doesn't give you such side effects.

Most importantly it is normal and natural to feel this way as every woman reacts differently to her imminent cycle.

If you are not on the pill, then perhaps just try to manage it the best you can by doing the above or writing down the things you experience just before you get your period if you feel you can't talk to someone about it.

If you have a close friend or family member then it might be worth making arrangements with them around this time so you are not in the house alone.
