Jenny asks :

Hi Lucy,

I was wondering why have women and girls all turned away from pantyhose and nylons. Is this just a fad and they will come back?

Our Reply

Hi Jenny,

I can’t tell you, with all the fashions that have been revived over the years why this one hasn’t caught on again.

In years gone by I think that these items were to preserve dignity in a society where at one stage a woman who showed her ankle was deemed ‘slutty’. Today we are in a much more liberal society and women are not judged so much for baring their legs in public- so there seems to be less of a need for them. Especially when a lot of pantyhose are very thin- they provide little warmth, simply more to colour a woman’s legs.

With all of the products out there to tan legs- again there is less demand for such as this to create the desired effect. Pantyhose tend now to be more of a fashion statement with daring patterns on them; some are made to look like suspenders for instance.

If you are comfortable wearing them- I see no reason why you should stop just because they are not readily on the high street right now. Everyone has their individual preferences when it comes to their wardrobe- so if pantyhose are a firm fixture in yours then embrace being different in your fashion choices!
