Rescuers were shocked to find hundreds of animals on the windowsills, stairs, toilet and kitchen counter in a Toronto flat.

The cats were found when residents in nearby housing became concerned when a strong smell was coming from the flat.

The animals have all been vaccinated and sprayed to prevent out-of-control breeding.

An Animal Toronto Cat Rescue spokesperson said: ''The cats and kittens are doing well in their foster homes. We are so grateful to our volunteers and staff who stepped up to the plate to get cats of the apartment right away.

''This is the second large cat hoarding situation we have been involved with in a month! It's very important that this NOT continue.''
