A global social networking site designed specifically for beautiful people has been hit by a 'Shrek' virus.

It must be a bitter pill to swallow, but better to have had a slice of heaven then never to have tasted it at all.

With members of BeautifulPeople.com usually having to pass a strict test to assess whether they are good-looking enough or not to be a member, the rogue virus meant 30,000 ugly applicants have been able to join without having their picture verified.

The site's owners have now been forced to apologise to the unfortunate-looking users who had to be banished from the website.

Managing director Greg Hodge said: "We got suspicious when tens of thousands of new members were accepted over a six-week period, many of whom were no oil painting

"It must be a bitter pill to swallow, but better to have had a slice of heaven then never to have tasted it at all."

An average of one in every seven applicants is accepted to the website.
