Harvard Professor Avi Loeb is convinced that a spacecraft plunged into the sea off Manus Island in Papua New Guinea.

A US Space Command report says it was a meteor but Loeb is adamant that the object has been built by extraterrestrials.

The physicist wrote: "Our discovery of an interstellar meteor heralds a new research frontier.

"The fundamental question is whether any interstellar meteor might indicate a composition that is unambiguously artificial in origin."

Loeb is aiming to use "magnets" to retrieve the equipment in a bid to prove his theory.

He explained: "My dream is to press some buttons on a functional piece of equipment that was manufactured outside of Earth.

"This gives a whole new meaning to a 'fishing expedition' - in this case, one involving extraterrestrial equipment."
