Carolina Waterfowl Rescue has caused a stir with its request for ill-fitting undergarments, and director Jennifer Gordon has explained they used the clasps to weld the animals' cracked shells back together.

Admitting the item has been on the organisation's wish list for months - with no donations - she told CNN: ''Bras just came up.''

She added that the group treats anywhere between three and 40 turtles each week, depending on the season.

It's said the injury rates for the creatures increase in spring when they move from lakes and ponds to lay their eggs by the sea.
