A report featuring 36 countries found that the average person in Britain gets drunk 51.1 times a year - almost once a week.

The survey also showed that only one in five drinkers regret the night before - most of them women and US, Canada and Australia closely followed the UK at the top of the global rankings.

Professor Adam Winstock, who led the study, said: ''We get told too much is bad, and it is, but current guidelines fail to accept the pleasure of intoxication and give little guide on the difference between being a little and a lot drunk, and doing it three or four times a year versus weekly''.

The study comes amid an overall downward trend of alcohol consumption in the UK, particularly among young adults.
