A Cornwall cafe caught the ire of customers after appearing to put cream on its scones before the jam.

Cafe forced to apologise

Cafe forced to apologise

An advert shared by Lanhydrock House and Garden including a mouth-watering picture of their 'Cornish cream tea' selection for Mother's Day over the weekend, but it appears to have caused a storm in a tea cup by bringing a longtime row back to the forefront.

Residents of Devon and Cornwall infamously disagree over which comes first - cream or jam - and the cafe has left locals fuming, with one Facebook user commenting: ''That makes me feel sick - Lanhydrock you are a Cornish place, jam first!''

Another added: ''Oh god!!! Jam then cream!!!! Think my mum would disown me if I gave her this cream tea.''

After the slightly tongue-in-cheek backlash, the National Trust issued an apology.

It read: ''We'd like to sincerely apologise for any offence caused by a recent scone-shot shown on the page. The member of staff responsible has been reprimanded and marched back over the Tamar.

''We'd like to reassure our Cornish community that our catering team would never make such a heinous mistake and that our jam and cream are usually served in little pots so the order of their application is not subject to such appalling error. Rest assured, your mothers are safe here.''
