The animal, named CamElla, caused a stir after roaming loose around the local area - according to animal services officer Michaela McGuian.

She told the Daily Democrat newspaper: "I'm not a camel expert but like other large animals, they may get curious if they get a chance to escape. We find with cows and horses, they will sometimes wander, just to see if there's food out there."

McGuian revealed that she had received calls about CamElla previously but revealed that the humped creatures can be kept as pets.

She said: "A camel is an unusual animal that people are concerned is illegal but it's not. That's most people's general question because it's an unusual animal to have as a pet."
