Tatty had climbed into the engine bay of a vehicle and survived a 70mph trip for four miles down a dual carriageway.

The shocked driver only realised the animal was there after he heard meowing when he stopped at a supermarket.

Tatty was reunited with owner Caroline Ludlam after the RSPCA carried out an hour-long rescue. RSPCA officer Shane Lynn claimed that the cat was lucky to escape without harm.

He said: ''He was well and truly stuck behind the engine of the other car when I arrived but with the car owner's help we managed to disconnect the battery and several electrical components under the bonnet to make just enough room for me to reach him and bring him to safety. The rescue was quite tricky.

''Thankfully, this intrepid cat had no injuries which was quite a surprise.''
