Bernie Reifkind - boss of Los Angeles executive search firm Premier - posted about his act of kindness on LinkedIn as a way of encouraging fellow chiefs to treat their workers in a positive way.

He explained how she was crying at her desk one morning, and revealed she had been up all night caring for her sick child but couldn't afford to take more time off despite her exhaustion.

He added: ''I sent her home and promised that she would get paid. In addition, I wrote her a [cheque] on the spot for extra money to alleviate her immediate financial worry.

''She was incredibly grateful. To this day, she is my best employee not just because of her talent but her loyalty.

''Employers, please understand that most people are carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders.''
