China has opened a bank run entirely by robots.

The China Construction Bank (CBB) bank in Shanghai is the world's first of its kind and runs on virtual reality, facial recognition and artificial intelligence technology to help provide service to customers.

According to the South China Morning Post newspaper, customers who walk through the front doors are greeted by a walking, talking humanoid robot who aims to answer their queries and assist them with their transactions.

And employees at the bank say the unstaffed branch will act as a good test to gage customer opinion but they will still use human bankers to offer ''complicated'' services and help with ''wealthy clients''.

He Fei, a staff member at a fellow bank, said: ''Unstaffed services can solve repeated and standard demands from mass clients.

''But human bankers are still needed to offer professional advices, to serve the complicated and personalised demands, for instance by wealthy clients.''

And for wealthy clients in need of human help, the bank offers a private room for remote chats via video link.
