For some people - including those suffering from seasonal affective disorder or who have lost loved ones - the festive season can be a depressing time of year, and hearing holiday music can have a negative impact as the songs are on repeat in the build-up, while for others this can be a reminder of the stress at this time of year.

Clinical psychologist Linda Blair told Sky News: ''People working in the shops have to learn how to tune out Christmas music, because if they don't, it really does make you unable to focus on anything else.

''You simply are spending all of your energy trying not to hear what you're hearing.''
