The weekly clap for NHS workers has resulted in a rise in injuries.

Clap for Carers

A leading medic has asked well-wishers to take care of themselves during the applause as they don't want injured people adding to the workload for the health service.

Dr. Richard Pilling, a consultant surgeon at Harrogate District Hospital, said: ''The clap for carers has made us a little busier.

''It's very nice that everyone is enthusiastic but people are coming out banging pans and seeing who can clap the loudest, and therein accidents lie.

''It's nice to walk on to your doorstep and show appreciation. Just do it less vigorously - you don't have to be the loudest on the street.

''It's adding to the workload at a time when we really want to avoid that happening.''
