Grigore Lup created the special footwear, which come in a European size 75, to make sure people will be one-and-a-half metres apart when facing each other.

Lup, who comes from the city of Cluj, came up with the idea after noticing that people were ignoring social distancing rules.

He said: ''You can see it on the street, people are not respecting social distancing rules.

''I went to the market to buy seedlings for my garden. There weren't many people there but they kept getting closer and closer.''

It takes Lup two days to make the shoes, but it has given him some much-needed business during the pandemic and will also help people stay safe.

He explained: ''If two people wearing these shoes were facing each other, there would be almost one-and-a-half metres between them.''
