A 24-year-old man was unhappy with the high quote he received from his car insurance company and so decided to change the gender on his birth certificate to female.

In Canada, males under 25 are required to pay higher rates than women, as they are statistically more likely to get into car accidents.

The man, referred to only as David, detailed his experiment on Reddit, and announced that he had managed to save almost C$1,100 (£640) a year.

Speaking to CBC.ca, he explained: ''I have taken advantage of a loophole. I'm a man, 100 percent. Legally, I'm a woman.''

David decided to make the drastic choice after he purchased a brand new Chevrolet Cruz and needed a full-on collision insurance policy, which was a lot cheaper for a woman.
