An eyewitness reported the large plastic-wrapped package - which contained 23 smaller ones - earlier this week, and local police were sent to investigate the incident.

Explaining that Hurricane Florence could have been the cause, beach safety patrol captain Tammy Malphurs said that plenty of objects end up being washed up during such extreme weather on the coast.

He told WKMG-TV: ''Typically it happens when we have a large surf and winds on shore.

''Sometimes, we have a lot of things wash up on shore. We haven't had a lot of things but this is the first thing so far.''
