Leading nutritionist Holly Zoccolan has claimed that pine helps tackle coughs and colds and is packed with vitamins A and C.

Zoccolan, the founder of wellbeing website The Health Zoc, argues that nobody should throw away their Christmas tree once the celebrations come to an end.

She said: "Pine can boost your wellbeing. Pine is edible. You could add some pine into your cooking as you would with other herbs and spices or you could drink pine needle tea."

Zoccolan continued: "Pine essential oil has been shown to have an anti-inflammatory effect on our skin and helps to prevent eczema, rosacea and possibly acne too. Pine is often used to reduce inflammation in the respiratory tract.

"It can help to treat a cough or common cold and helps with reducing inflammation in our entire system."
