A gardener has grown the largest chilli pepper in the UK at a remarkable 18 inches.

Graham Barratt beat the previous benchmark by 0.4 inches with his Thunder Mountain Longhorn Pepper, which he grew on his allotment in Gloucestershire.

Barratt has previously claimed prizes for giant vegetables but the pepper was the first time he had broken a record.

He says that growing big veg is harder than it looks.

Barratt told The Sun newspaper: "Growing giant vegetables sounds easy but there are so many factors  —  the right seeds and weather, but also the right care so they grow the best.

"It’s a lot of work but it’s what I love to do and it’s very rewarding.

"Growing them really feels like being an expectant father at times — they are like your children."

Barratt planted his pepper seeds back in January and tended to them almost every day until his record was verified last week.
