A gay goose and a swan who spent 18 years together could have their relationship immortalised.

Thomas the goose passed away in 2017 and was buried next to Henry the swan - the love of his life - who died eight years earlier.

As reported by the Metro, their romance could be memorialised with life-sized bronze statues in Waimanu lagoon along New Zealand's Kapiti Coast.

The feathery couple spent nearly two decades in a relationship, before Henry ditched Thomas for a female goose named Henrietta - but the trio developed some kind of polyamorous relationship.

Waikanae Bird Tour operator Mik Peryer said: ''He got really aggressive and started beating the swans up. But once their eggs hatched he changed completely and took to those babies like they were his own.''

Local resident Eileen Thomas has drawn up the statues - which would cost up to £62,000.

Thomas was almost 40 when he died last year, and he was remembered at his memorial as a ''loving partner, caring father and an icon for the LGBT community''.

Mr Preyer - who has immortalised their story in books - added: ''There's a love story there but it also goes across the boundaries and brings in the gay relationship which I think was wonderful.''
