The pair of male African Penguins were found to be nesting an egg alongside heterosexual couples at the DierenPark Zoo Amersfoort after taking it during an ''unguarded moment''.

Zookeeper Marc Belt told DutchNews.nl: ''The gay couple are looking after the egg very well and take turns in keeping it warm.

''Homosexuality is fairly common in penguins, but what makes this couple remarkable is that they have gotten hold of an egg.''

It's said the straight couple went on to produce another egg.

With breeding season underway, the zoo has already welcomed the first chick of the season, and while keepers hope the gay couple's egg will hatch it's not known if it has been properly fertilised.
